“Turning Poison into Medicine”

“Turning Poison into Medicine”

In April of 2001, I embarked on a  journey of recovery from alcohol addiction. It was a dark period in my life, but it ultimately led me to a profound spiritual awakening that would change the trajectory of my existence forever. Through a 12-step program, I began my path towards healing and self-discovery. Little did I know that this would also lead me to discover the message of Nichiren Buddhism, which would become an integral part of my recovery process.

Six months into my sobriety journey, I stumbled upon the practice of chanting Daimoku , a central tenet of Nichiren Buddhism. With the simple act of chanting “nam-myoho-renge-kyo “, I achieved my first major goal - moving to the United States. The power of this practice propelled me forward, and as time went on, more accomplishments unfolded in front of me. I obtained US permanent residency, secured my own apartment in the vibrant community of South Beach , purchased a brand new car, and even decided to return to college to further my education. The transformations were seemingly endless, and I reveled in the newfound joys of a fulfilling life.

However, my life took an unexpected turn in 2012 when I experienced a physical, mental, and spiritual breakdown. The consequences of my actions caused me to lose everything I had gained over the course of eleven years of sobriety. It was a devastating blow, but it also presented an opportunity for growth and resilience. During this difficult period, I decided to visit a prominent Buddhist center in Florida to reignite my chanting practice. This decision served as a turning point in my life, reigniting my determination to change and helping me achieve yet another goal - becoming an American citizen.

But the journey didn't stop there. With renewed faith and determination, I made the life-changing decision to move to New York and settle in Manhattan.

In 2018, I achieved another milestone by becoming certified as a NY peer specialist, allowing me to support and guide others on their own recovery journeys. After nearly eight years of unemployment, I finally secured a job as a peer specialist.

These days, my focus lies in living in the present moment and practicing gratitude. I firmly believe that even with a small amount of faith and the determination of a lion, one can achieve boundless possibilities.

My journey has taught me the importance of embracing change, being resilient in the face of adversity, and remaining committed to personal growth. Each step of my path has shaped me into the person I am today.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story. If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please feel free to reach out to me. I look forward to continuing this incredible journey of growth and chasing boundless possibilities.

Wishing you all the best,
