Through her Eyes…

I had the privilege of witnessing a truly touching and beautiful moment that taught me several valuable lessons. It happened as I was leaving the adult home at the end of my day, when I noticed two residents standing by the main entrance. These two individuals were good friends, both facing their own unique challenges.
Working in an office across from their rooms, I had the opportunity to observe them quite often. She was a quiet, polite, and wise woman who used a wheelchair, while he was a social, funny, and extroverted man who was visually impaired. Both of them were relatively new to dealing with their disabilities.
As I double-checked that I had everything I needed before getting into my car, I overheard the gentleman ask his friend with a sense of excitement, "What color is it?" She responded in the softest and sweetest tone of voice, describing in great detail how the sky looked at that very moment. I was captivated by this scene and decided to silently remain a part of this beautiful exchange.
She exclaimed, "Wow, it's very beautiful! Some parts have different tones of orange, but there's this particular area that has a stunning purple color." Then, with surprise in her voice, she added, "Guess what? There are many birds, I think seagulls, flying towards the ocean. Let me see... Yes, I can see a lot of them." Impatiently, he asked her, "What else do you see?"
After a moment, she concluded her description by saying with awe, "Ohhh, it's so beautiful. I would love to go to the boardwalk." He immediately asked her, "Where? How far is it?" I remember straining my ears to catch her soft response, but all I heard was the sound of their uncontrollable laughter. I wished I could have known what she said, but at that moment, I realized I had already witnessed enough of their beautiful display of human kindness.
He held onto her wheelchair as she vividly described what he couldn't see. Silently, I left and got into my car, overwhelmed with a profound sense of being moved and grateful for being able to witness such a precious moment.
